5th St Bridge Repairs: Over Time and Over Budget

The Fifth St. Bridge rehabilitation came in late and over budget, and now we’re finding out just how much.

At its Monday meeting, council will be asked to approve an additional $1.2-million in construction and consulting fees for the already $7.5-million project.

The span was closed July 1st 2017, and work was supposed to be finished by the end of the year.  Instead it took until November 2019 before the bridge fully reopened.

Getting the blame for the delays and cost over runs include the Feb 2018 flood damage, unforeseen issues in retaining wall and pier reconstructions, additional work on Simcoe Lane, and delays by Bell to deal with telecommunication wires.
