Downtown Wallaceburg.

Concerns are being raised once again about vandalism and break-ins around downtown Wallaceburg.

Last night, Chatham-Kent Police responded to an incident of people on the roof of a James Street business, but authorities say they were gone by the time officers arrived.

There was another incident yesterday afternoon in which an adult man was spotted throwing nails onto the sidewalk.

Police are asking anyone who sees or hears anything suspicious to give them a call. They’re also encouraging all residents and business owners to ensure their property is well lit and secure to deter potential criminal activity.

Meantime, Mayor Darrin Canniff says security cameras to keep tabs on downtown areas are part of the long term plan.

“There’s a pilot project coming in that’s been delayed (by) COVID, but we’re going to put CCTV cameras in downtown Chatham, there’s five or six of them that are going to go up.”

The cameras would have a direct link to police headquarters to be monitored and studied to see how effective they are at reducing crime.

Canniff says once the Chatham pilot project has been launched, Wallaceburg is next on the list.

“I’m hoping sooner rather than later, because other communities have shown that it certainly deters crime, if police are responding to something they can pull up the cameras on their screen and see what’s going on.”
