A man wanted in connection to a devastating fire at a Chatham apartment building has been arrested.

A warrant was issued for the arrest of 48-year-old Leonard Greason of London following a blaze at 99 McNaughton Avenue West in August 2024. No one was injured in the fire, but nearly 100 residents were displaced, some of whom have still not been able to return to their homes.

Chatham-Kent police contacted authorities in St. Thomas on Tuesday after it was learned that Greason had associates in the area. The accused was located on Wednesday by the St. Thomas Police Service, however, he allegedly attempted to flee from officers. Greason was arrested following a short foot pursuit and has since been transferred to Chatham-Kent police headquarters. He remains in custody pending a bail hearing on a charge of arson with disregard for human life.

Another suspect in the fire, 30-year-old Erin Ashley Ott, was arrested in late August, also facing a charge of arson-disregard for human life. She has since been released on bail with several conditions.
