A celebration of Indigenous history is being held on Walpole Island First Nation later this month.
Treaty Day is being marked on August 29th to mark the St Anne Treaty of 1796 and explore its historical and contemporary significance to Bkejwanong Territory and Anishinaabe people.
Also known as Treaty #7, the document covered a reserve “four leagues square,” or roughly 92,000 acres, and recognized the rights and independence of all the Indian Nations. However, just eight years later, the Canadian government denied the treaty’s existence.
Thursday’s event includes a baseball game, tug-of-war, barbecue, and more.
The day beings with a sunrise ceremony at 7am at the Walpole Island baseball diamond, with activities running from 10am until 3pm.
