The local Catholic school board and municipal police are partnering to utilize a now-closed elementary school in Chatham.

St. Clair Catholic District School Board will be allowing the recently decommissioned St. Ursula Catholic School to be used for training purposes by the Chatham-Kent Police Service.

Chatham-Kent police teams will utilize the school for training sessions once a week, with each session lasting up to four hours.

The school board said the partnership with CK police will also help to deter loitering and vandalism at the school as the site waits to be listed for sale.

“Their presence not only enhances safety and security in our community, but it also reinforces the positive relationships we strive to build between law enforcement and our schools,” said Director of Education Scott Johnson in a news release.

The board said community members may notice an increased police presence at the school, however, there is no cause for public concern.

St. Ursula Catholic School closed its doors at the end of the last school year in June, and has been unused since.
