A first-time self-published author from Chatham-Kent is hoping his experiences can help those struggling with mental health issues.

Joel Emery is set to release his first book in the coming weeks, entitled ‘In My Write Mind: Musings on Mental Health, Self-Growth, Relationships, and Everything in Between.’

Emery said his journey through anxiety served as the catalyst for his book.

“This is honestly a long-time dream of mine. In 2018 I came out with anxiety so what that did for me was it opened up the floodgates to talk about other things that were going on in my life,” he said. “Whether it was about self-growth or relationships… all of those things kind of became the recipe for this book.”

‘In My Write Mind’ is described as an unstructured nonfiction book that invites readers to explore Emery’s human experience thus far. A personal essay about a pivotal moment in the author’s life is also included.

As well, the book includes illustrations created by local artist, Sarah Steele.

Emery will be holding a book signing event at Turns and Tales in downtown Chatham on October 5, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. The book will also be available for purchase online at a later date.
