A Chatham man has been arrested after a stolen vehicle was used in a theft at a local department store and then set on fire.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers were called to the Wal-Mart on St. Clair Street on Tuesday after a man left the St. Clair Street store with stolen property and fled in a Dodge Ram 1500 that had previously been reported stolen.

Later that day, officers responded to a vehicle fire on the railroad tracks in the Sass Road area and found that it was the same Dodge Ram.

Using video surveillance footage from the theft, officers identified a suspect who was then arrested at an address on Thames Street.

The 48-year-old accused is now charged with possession of stolen property under $5,000. He was taken to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.
