Chatham-Kent Council has ended discussions regarding a possible referendum on Chatham-Kent’s Community Hub project.
A motion brought forward by North Kent representative Rhonda Jubenville requesting that municipal staff draft a report on how to proceed with the referendum was defeated by council 12-5 on Monday.
Prior to the vote, Jubenville withdrew a portion of the motion that would have called for the Community Hub project to cease all financial and physical operations until after the referendum.
Previously on October 21, CK Council voted in favour of moving forward with the final design plans for the $53 million project, which would see the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre, CK Public Library and CK Museum amalgamated into the former Sears building in downtown Chatham. Council also supported the hiring of a project manager to support the design and construction of the Community Hub.
The detailed designs for the Community Hub are expected to return to council in the first or second quarters of 2025.
