A rock opera of biblical proportions is ready to hit the stage in Chatham.
Thursday, November 14 is opening night for Theatre Kent’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Chatham Capitol Theatre.
The musical tells the story of Jesus in the final days leading up to his crucifixion, with a special focus on his relationships with Judas Iscariot and Mary Magdalene. The retelling features unforgettable songs such as “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” “Superstar,” and “Heaven on Their Minds.”
Director and choreographer Jamie Johnston says bringing this story to life is something of a passion project.
“I’d taken a break (from directing) for about eight years when my daughter was born,” Johnston says. “When it was time to return, we (tried to) think of the best show to come back with. I wanted something big and epic and that could really excite not only the people to come see it, but the people who wanted to be in it as well, and this fit all those boxes.”
This is the first time Jesus Christ Superstar has been performed at the Chatham Capitol Theatre.
Johnston says the audience is in for a true spectacle, with music, effects, and a stellar cast.
“Jesus is played by Josh Campbell, Judas played by Brock MacKenzie, Mary Magdalene played by Stacie Dengel, and a cast of almost 50 others including almost a dozen children, and a very large orchestra of local musicians.”
Alongside Johnston on the production team are musical director Tom Overton, producer JC Wright, and stage manager Gina Paradis.
Evening performances are taking place November 14, 15, and 16 evening, along with a matinee on November 16. Tickets can be purchased online at cktickets.com or through the Cultural Centre box office.
