A Ridgetown native has been named as a recipient of the province’s highest civilian honour for outstanding achievements.
Dr. Margery Holman, who was born and raised in Ridgetown, has been named to the Order of Ontario and will be honoured during a ceremony in Toronto later this year, along with 28 other Ontarians.
A long-time coach, professor and administrator at the University of Windsor, Holman has spent over five decades challenging unethical and inequitable conditions, initiating change, and creatively mentoring others to co-create the wide-ranging opportunities for girls and women in sports today.
She addressed systemic inequities in sports, including sexual harassment, abuse, and hazing, while creating ethical, equitable alternative practices. Her knowledge and experience also led her to serve on the International Olympic Committee.
The Order of Ontario is reserved for exceptional individuals who have made a lasting impact in the province, the country and the world.
A graduate of Ridgetown District High School, Holman is a member of the Windsor and Essex County Sports Hall of Fame, the University of Windsor Sports Hall of Fame, and the Ontario Volleyball Association Hall of Fame. As well, she was named as one of six honourees for the 2024 Women of Excellence by the May Court Club of Chatham
