Former United Way Employee Sentenced to House Arrest

A former employee of the United Way of Chatham-Kent has been sentenced to house arrest for defrauding the charitable organization out of over $300,000.

Veronica Whittal was sentenced in a Chatham courtroom on Wednesday with a joint submission from the defence and Crown for a conditional sentence.

The court heard Whittal suffers from a gambling addiction, and has sought counselling.

The 49-year-old Tilbury resident now faces 23 months house arrest and restitution of the $302,341 that was e-transferred out of the United Way coffers between October 8, 2021 and October 20, 2022.

Whittal was arrested February 2, 2024 and charged with one count of fraud over $5000.
