Two men are facing charges following a break-in and theft in Chatham.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service said two individuals smashed the glass window in a door to gain access to a Grand Avenue West business, triggering an alarm shortly before 5 a.m. on Sunday. The thieves stole a 200-pound safe containing various items and fled the scene on bicycles that were towing a trailer.
Damage to the door is pegged at around $1,500.
Officers were able to identify a pair of suspects after reviewing CCTV footage from a nearby convenience store prior to the alarm being triggered.
One of the suspects, who was known to police from an encounter with officers earlier that night, was located hiding at a residence and was arrested. A second suspect was also arrested after officers found that he matched a description from the surveillance video.
Authorities were also able to recover the safe and its contents.
A 39-year-old Chatham-Kent man and a 51-year-old man from Dover Township have now been charged with theft and break-and-enter. Both have since been released with February court dates.
