Firefighters on Walpole Island First Nation are being kept busy these days, battling numerous marsh fires.

Officials with the Walpole Island Fire Department say yesterday alone, crews responded to multiple fires in the River Road South area and the north side of Squirrel Island. Despite challenging conditions, firefighters were able to bring the largest blaze under control, ensure all of the smaller spot fires were fully doused before clearing the scene.

Officials are also reminding members of the public that marsh fires have far-reaching effects on both local residents and wildlife. A raccoon was discovered suffering severe burns, but firefighters were unable to provide first aid in time. Residents are reminded to be mindful of wind direction, potential animal nesting areas, and the proximity of marsh weeds to neighbouring properties.
