Alleged Thief Crashes Stolen Vehicle

A Wallaceburg man is facing charges after allegedly stealing a vehicle in Dresden and crashing it near Glencoe.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said a man entered a gas station on St. George Street in Dresden just after 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday and threatened another man, demanding the keys to his vehicle. The thief fled the scene in the stolen vehicle.

Officers responded to the gas station and were able to identify a suspect through video surveillance footage.

A short time later, the thief was involved in a single-vehicle collision north of Glencoe and fled the scene. However, following an investigation, officers with the Ontario Provincial Police located and arrested the suspect in Petrolia.

A 42-year-old Wallaceburg man is now charged with robbery with violence, theft of a motor vehicle involving violence, and possession of stolen property over $5,000.

The accused was transferred to CK police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.
