It appears more local residents are showing interest in the upcoming federal election.
According to the returning officer for Chatham-Kent-Leamington, just over 24,000 ballots were cast at advance polls throughout the Easter long weekend.
While that is an increase over the last federal election in 2021, returning offer Guy Taylor says the numbers are to be taken with a grain of salt since this is the first election under the new boundaries for CKL. The electoral district previously had 86,615 eligible voters in the 2021 federal election, but with new boundaries expanded to include the entire municipality of Chatham-Kent, that number has grown to over 106,000.
Nation-wide, Elections Canada officials say 7.3 million ballots were cast in advance polls, a 25% increase compared to the 2021 election.
