New Webpage Launched To Promote Additional Dwelling Units

Chatham-Kent is launching a new webpage to provide information and incentives for developing more living spaces within the municipality.

The webpage offers information to residents about Additional Dwelling Units (ADUs), which are self-contained residential units that occupy the same lot as a primary residence. ADUs can either be attached or detached from the primary residence.

Information on the steps to build ADUs, things to consider when building, and the incentives provided by the municipality are all provided on the new webpage. An online mapping tool is also available, allowing residents to determine if ADUs are permitted in their area.

“Right now, the municipality is offering grants of up to $25,000 to residents who build one new ADU in homes that are five or more years old,” said Allison Lambing, Planner I with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, in a news release. “The maximum grant goes up to $30,000 if a homeowner wishes to build new two ADUs on properties with zoning permissions to do so.”

The municipality said developing more ADUs is part of a larger strategy to increase the housing supply throughout Chatham-Kent.
