Free Fishing Offered Over Mother’s Day Weekend

While it might not be the most conventional way to celebrate Mother’s Day, the Ontario government offering everyone the chance to fish for free this weekend.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry will be waiving the need for fishing licenses on Saturday and Sunday.

“Fishing is a timeless Ontario tradition that brings people together. Whether you’re an experienced angler or casting a line for the first time, fishing is a great way to connect with loved ones and enjoy everything the great outdoors has to offer,” said Mike Harris, Minister of Natural Resources, in a news release. “This Mother’s Day weekend, why not get outside and enjoy the water with friends and family, all while supporting local jobs and communities that thrive through fishing.”

This is one of four times throughout the year when Canadian residents can fish without a license, including the weekends of Family Day, Father’s Day, and during Family Fishing Week from June 28 to July 6.

During these times, all conservation license catch limits, size limits, sanctuaries and other regulations will still apply. Residents taking part in free fishing periods will also need to carry federal or provincial identification showing their name and date of birth.
