Members of a local advocacy group are hitting the road today, taking their fight to prevent the reopening of a dormant landfill in Dresden to Queens Park.

Chair of Dresden C.A.R.E.D., Stefan Premdas, will be joined by members of Walpole Island First Nation, former provincial NDP candidate Kathryn Shailer, and others will be holding a news conference in Toronto later this morning, alongside NDP Environment Critic Peter Tabuns and MPPS from the Liberal and Green parties.

The group will be calling on Premier Doug Ford to answer questions about proposed legislation to remove the need for a full environmental assessment in order to reopen the Irish School Road site.

The Ontario government announced legislation last month, which proposes removing comprehensive environmental assessment (EA) requirements for the property to allow York1 Waste Solutions to move forward with the development of the landfill.

Meantime, the deadline for public comment on Bill 5 is fast approaching. Area residents can provide their comments on the proposed provincial legislation as part of the public consultation process until May 17.
