Chatham-Kent council has given the green light to rezoning a former retirement home to allow for more housing in Dresden.

At their meeting Monday night, council members voted 14-2 in favour of the rezoning, with councillors Rhonda Jubenville and Michael Bondy voting against. The site at 650 Park Street previously came before council in late April, when councillors instructed the applicant to hold a public information session.

That session took place on May 22, with 43 residents in attendance.  Jubenville, who was at the session, said constituents took issue with the lack of change in ownership.

In a follow-up report, municipal staff recommended approval of the rezoning, noting that it is a privately initiated development application. The new zoning will allow for a range of medium-density residential uses, including senior citizen dwellings, apartment units, row houses, four-plexes, and duplexes.
