Minister Promises Continued Provincial Support For Wheatley

Ontario’s Natural Resources Minister is reassuring Wheatley residents that the provincial government will continue to support the town, following its most recent gas leak scare.

Minister Mike Harris visited downtown Wheatley on Friday to survey the site, one day after hydrogen sulphide emissions were detected behind the library on Talbot Street West.

The gas leak prompted the evacuation of around 60 homes in the area until the situation was resolved. After experts confirmed that there were no imminent risks to public safety, all residents were permitted to return home. However, the Wheatley library branch will remain closed until further notice while an investigation continues.

During his visit on Friday, Harris spoke to local residents and offered words of encouragement, adding that the province would continue to invest in finding, capping and monitoring abandoned gas wells throughout the region.

Fire crews have been conducting air monitoring in downtown Wheatley every 30 minutes to ensure ongoing public safety.
