Off-Duty Cop Helps Thwart Alleged Shoplifter

A Chatham man has been arrested after allegedly shoplifting in front of an off-duty police officer.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said the off-duty officer spotted a man at a St. Clair Street store who had concealed items and left without paying shortly after 8 p.m. on Sunday.

The man fled the scene and attempted to gain entry to a nearby residence without permission. Other officers were called to the scene and arrested the suspect in the area.

A 29-year-old Chatham man is now charged with theft under $5,000 and being in a dwelling unlawfully. He will answer the charges in court next month.
