Work is set to get underway this week to try to prevent further gas leaks in downtown Wheatley.

Contractors and internal staff have been putting together operational, health and safety, and emergency response plans to cap the abandoned water well behind the Wheatley branch of the Chatham-Kent Public Library.

Contractors are expected to be on site today with work starting tomorrow. There may be some temporary road closures around the area to move in equipment.

The Province has also committed to a coordinated approach with the landowner and Municipality to investigate a potential water well at the corner of Erie Street South and Chestnut Street. Officials say there will be some increased activity around that site as well, and local residents will be given an update on the timing for any potential work as the situation unfolds.

Meantime, following a virtual open house over the weekend to update residents on the remediation plans, a similar in-person meeting is expected to be held later this week at the Wheatley Resource Centre. At this point, a date for that meeting has not been announced.
