The 8th Annual Rockin Wheel for Spinal Cord Research is on August 17, 2013 is a local fundraising event held in Mount Brydges . August 2012 is Kenny Allore’s seventh event. The total raised in the last seven years is $150 000!
Twenty years ago, 17-year-old defenseman Kenny Allore who had recently gone to the junior Olympic team camp was going back for the puck in a playoff game in Belmont when he was checked from behind and driven into the boards. When he tried to get up he had no feeling in his body. His neck was broken and his spine was injured; he would never walk again. Ending his dreams of a career as a hockey player.
This has not stopped Ken. In fact, he has helped implement the stop sign on the back of all Canadian minor hockey player jersey’s to help remind kids to stop and think about checking from behind. Ken has traveled all over South Western Ontario and Eastern Ont. educating over 30 000 people about the dangers of checking from behind and how it has affected his life and many others.
As President of “Rockin Wheel” For Spinal Cord Research, and a Partner with stopconcussions, Ken feels that more needs to be done for people like himself. Ken states “I thought; I love music and there hasn’t been anything like a music festival for spinal cord research before and maybe it can catch on throughout North America. I definitely want to make it an annual event, maybe even to host it at the Budweiser Gardens in London, Ontario one day”.
“stopconcussions” is a not-for-profit national organization that was established to educate and advocate on the cause, effects, and consequences of concussions and neurotrama injuries.
Founded by players and alumni, medical professionals, trainers, and various key sports associations, they have developed and executed key programs that reduce the incidence of catastrophic injuries in all sports. They believe that through education and skills development everyone can significantly reduce the number of concussions and injuries while enhancing the quality of sport and sportsmanship. “ If we can prevent needless concussions and spinal cord injuries from happening to someone else then all our efforts will have been successful”… Kerry Goulet – stopconcussions
All proceeds from Rockin Wheel go directly to stopconcussions – a campaign directed towards awareness, prevention and research programs for Neurotramatic injuries (Brain and Spine).
