The source of several gas leaks in downtown Wheatley has been successfully plugged.

Officials with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent said an abandoned water well behind the Wheatley library branch on Talbot Street West was uncovered during an excavation of the area last week. Following an investigation, the well was plugged.

As a result, the municipality will be reopening the library on Saturday.

The building was closed to the public out of an abundance of caution after multiple hydrogen sulfide gas leaks were detected in late June and early July. Library services were relocated to The Village Resource Centre during the closure.

According to municipal officials, at no time was gas detected inside the library.

The library parking lot will remain closed to allow the municipality to continue actively monitoring for gas near the plugged well. Monthly soil gas surveys will also be conducted at the site moving forward.
