The new school year is just a few short weeks away, and local educators are doing their part to make sure the youngest students are being safe.

Chatham-Kent Lambton Administrative School Services (CLASS) and local school bus operators are hosting a first-time rider orientation day on August 16 at Ursuline College in Chatham and Great Lakes Secondary School in Sarnia.

JK to Grade 1 students in the Lambton Kent and St. Clair Catholic district school boards are welcome to attend the free educational event, which will include a brief animated school bus safety video and a chance to board a bus and go for a short ride.

Safety trainers will be onsite to talk to children and their parents about basic school bus safety rules, how to cross the street safely and how to evacuate a bus in case of an emergency.

The orientation sessions are around 30 minutes long and will run continuously from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at both locations.
