The Ontario Minister of Health has formally approved the appointment of Chatham-Kent’s top doctor.
Dr. Shanker Nesathurai has been permanently appointed as the medical officer of health for the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit. Dr. Nesathurai has served in an acting role as MOH since he was hired two years ago.
“Dr. Nesathurai has been a steadfast advocate for improving health outcomes in our community,” said Brock McGregor, chair of the Chatham-Kent Board of Health, in a news release. “We are pleased that the province has confirmed his appointment as Medical Officer of Health for the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit. The Board of Health looks forward to continuing our work alongside Dr. Nesathurai and deeply values his leadership and insight as we address the important public health challenges facing Chatham-Kent.”
The Board of Health added that Dr. Nesathurai has demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing public health priorities across the region, with a key focus on addressing the health stigma of individuals and the community.
“Public health is about creating conditions where every person has the opportunity to live a healthy life,” said Dr. Nesathurai. “This is advanced by confronting stigma, listening to communities, as well as building systems that promote dignity and equity.”
