Donation Aims To Support Crime Prevention In Downtown Chatham

The owners of Chatham’s shopping mall are offering the local police department a sizable donation in an effort to support crime prevention and safety in the downtown area.

Representatives from 100 King Street CK Holdings Inc. have committed to providing the Chatham-Kent Police Service an initial $30,000 in 2025, $10,000 in 2026 and another $10,000 in 2027.

The group, which owns and is redeveloping the Downtown Chatham Centre, approached police officials with the donation in September, with the hope that it would be used to proactively tackle crime in the downtown core.

Police administration has recommended that the funds be used to purchase and install four additional surveillance cameras in downtown Chatham to enhance the existing CCTV program. The funds would cover the capital and annual operating costs for three years, after which additional funds would be required.

Because the donation exceeds $5,000, it will need approval from the Chatham-Kent Police Services Board during its next meeting on Wednesday.
