Anyone in Chatham-Kent hoping to take advantage of the province’s new rules on bringing their own alcohol to public events will, unfortunately, be disappointed.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has announced that it will not be issuing “Bring-Your-Own” alcohol permits at this time, and will continue to operate under the existing Municipal Alcohol Policy and Special Event permitting process.
As of April 30, the Ontario government now allows organizers of cultural or community outdoor public events to apply for a permit to allow attendees to bring and consume their own alcohol in designated areas.
However, municipal administration said the majority of local event organizers have indicated that they do not support the BYO permits, citing concerns about safety, liability, increased insurance and security costs, and the loss of fundraising revenue from licensed bar sales.
Chatham-Kent staff have also consulted with municipal departments, emergency services, public health officials, and other Ontario municipalities about the new regulations. A report coming to council at a later date is expected to detail that consultation.
