A student-led fundraiser in Blenheim has smashed its fundraising goal in support of Canadians affected by cancer.
Blenheim District High School (BDHS) students more than doubled expectations by raising $18,104.17 for the Canadian Cancer Society through this year’s Relay for Life event on June 4.
Led by students in Mr. Pete Kistulinec’s Grade 12 Leadership class, the event’s initial fundraising goal was $8,000. The event was planned, promoted, organized, executed, and tracked entirely by Blenheim students from start to finish.
BDHS Principal Elsa Natvik said the event’s success reflects years of intentional focus on student leadership development at BDHS.
“This massive undertaking was entirely student-led, and the results speak for themselves,” said Natvik in a news release. “Seeing our students demonstrate the robust leadership skills they have cultivated throughout the semester was truly inspiring, especially as they blew their initial $8,000 goal completely out of the water to fundraise an astonishing $18,000.”
Along with laps around the track, the Relay for Life included games, activities, and shared meals. Heads were also shaved in solidarity with those going through cancer treatment.
