A story of a local tragedy and how it impacted immigrant workers and workplace safety will be shared.
A special presentation is being held at the Chatham Capitol Theatre Rotary Lounge Friday evening, updating residents on work being done to create the documentary, Dresden 1957.
Directed by Eric Philpott, the film tells the story of six Dutch immigrant workers who were buried alive in Dresden on August 14, 1957, while excavating the site of a new water treatment plant and pumping station.
Friday’s screening will include a moment of silence at 7pm, the approximate time the excavation collapsed 69 years ago. The evening will also include a new presentation, Tragedy Forgotten: Dresden 1957, exploring the disaster, the people whose lives were changed by it, and the continuing work on the full documentary.
Meantime, a special Tragedy Forgotten exhibit is on display at Turns and Tales on King Street West in Chatham, including artifacts from the site, images of the families affected, and the overall Dutch immigrant journey.
Admission to the exhibit, which runs through Sunday, August 16, is free.
