The Ontario government is putting $5.2 million toward expanding sport and recreation programs in Indigenous communities across the province.

The new funding will support hundreds of Indigenous-led initiatives, creating opportunities for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples of all ages to get active and build leadership skills.

The investment targets three key areas, including multi-sport camps and coaching clinics through Indigenous Sport and Wellness Ontario; funding to help up to 27 First Nations hire local recreation coordinators; and expanded youth cultural camps focused on land-based learning, language, and leadership.

Among the Indigenous communities taking part in the program are Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and Oneida Nation of the Thames.

“Sport and recreation should be accessible to everyone at every level, and today’s announcement is another step in the province’s plan to ensure every child in Ontario gets the opportunity to compete,” said Brian Saunderson, Minister of Sport in a news release. “These investments will support Indigenous communities with reducing barriers and creating more opportunities for children, youth and people of all ages to get involved and stay active.”
