A new bylaw passed Monday night will allow people to have “camp” or recreational fires in their yards, both in town and in the country.
That’s a reversal from the previous bylaw that only allowed for so called “cooking” fires.
Assistant Fire Chief Bob Davidson says the provisions are designed to promote tourism.
“This will allow for the desire for burning for enjoyment, for recreational purposes, for cooking and that kind of thing,” Davidson explains. “We’ve introduced a bylaw that’s more comprehensive that allows for more burning than has been allowed in the past, but at the same time ensures public safety.”
The bylaw also allows for the usage of burn barrels or chimeneas.
An annual burn permit is available through the municipality for $20.
