The two main bridges in downtown Chatham will be staying put, despite a proposal to council to have them replaced by a single span.

The Third and Fifth Street bridges see a combined average of about 30,000 vehicles daily, and will cost about $27 million dollars to prepare.

Council voted down a proposal to close both bridges and build a new structure connecting St Clair to Queen Street, primarily because of how much disruption the build would cause.

Municipal officials have instead decided to focus on downtown revitalization and invest in replacing the sidewalks in the core.
