The Citizen’s Police Academy is back and is accepting applications.
The program, which is offered by the Chatham-Kent Police Service, is designed to strengthen the partnership between residents in the community and their police force.
Detective Constable Shawn Mungar says the program can be eye-opening.
“99.9% of the public’s interaction with the police are negative, so we said you know let’s do something that could be a positive interaction with the public,” Mungar says. “People walk out of there ‘Oh my God, I didn’t know the police did that, they do more than just what we see.’ All they see is the black police car with the lights on going down the road going here and there, they don’t see everything else.”
While the program won’t train you to be a police officer, it will show you some aspects of what officers go through on a day-to-day basis.
