It’s a day of celebrations on Walpole Island.
Schools and businesses around the First Nation are closed today in honour of National Aboriginal Day, and a number of activities are planned to mark the occasion.
A ribbon cutting is being held at 11 o’clock to mark the grand opening of the newly revamped baseball diamonds, which were refurbished thanks to a $137-thousand dollar grant from the Jays Care Foundation.
As well, festivities marking the Summer Solstice Celebration and Solidarity Day are being held throughout the afternoon, including kids’ activities, a barbecue, and live music.
The day will be capped off with fireworks tonight, starting at 10.
