The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority says water in the Thames River is discoloured due to a bloom of blue-green algae.

While it’s not as bad as the one that formed in August, the Conservation Authority is warning everyone to be cautious when near the river.

They say that while not all varieties of algae produce toxins, you should assume that toxins are present, and avoid swimming in the water, and restricting pet and livestock access to the river.

Meantime, the algae bloom in the western basin of Lake Erie continues to grow.

That’s according to the Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab, which says winds since Thursday have caused an increase in surface concentrations.

These concentrations are below the recreational threshold, but are above this limit closer to the Maumee Bay.
