This week marks the 20th anniversary of Chatham-Kent’s amalgamation.
Spurred on by changes in provincial funding, the Mike Harris PC government merged the City of Chatham and Kent County together in 1998 to become the Municipality of Chatham-Kent.
At the time, Kent County consisted of many townships, including Camden, Chatham, Dover, Harwich, and Howard, to name a few.
Once amalgamated, many services were combined.
Towns like Wallaceburg and Dresden had their own separate police departments, but in 1998, the Chatham-Kent Police Service was formed.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent was officially formed on January 1st, 1998.
