Revisiting Representation Across CK

A Chatham councillor wants to give residents a chance to vote on their municipal representation.

Doug Sulman says in the 20 years since amalgamation, residents haven’t been asked whether having 17 councillors is too much or too little.

As it stands there are two councillors in West Kent, three in South Kent, two each in East Kent, North Kent, and Wallaceburg, and six councillors for the former City of Chatham.

He says the question could be put on October’s election ballot.

“The only question that really needs to be answered is do you want the number reduced,” Sulman says. “If that passes in the next election, it will be up to the new council to either do it themselves, or hire a professor from a local university to give us a report on what the best way to go is.”

A public meeting will be held prior to the regular council meeting on February 12th, starting at 4pm, to see if Chatham-Kent residents want to vote on the issue.
