Claim Filed in Lotto Dispute

Legal proceedings have now been launched against a former Chatham man in the case of a $6-million lottery win.

Back in the fall, Marcel Thibeault left town after realizing he had one of two winning Lotto 6/49 tickets, leaving his common-law partner empty handed.

Steve Pickard, who represents Denise Robertson, says a statement of claim has now been filed for what his client believes is her fair share.

“The statement of claim simply says that we’re laying claim to half the ticket, that we believe Denise Robertson is the rightful, legal owner of half the ticket and she should be paid the proceeds,” Pickard explains.

“We’re also asking that the court award punitive damages against Thibeault for conduct that really offends the community and offends the court, and is a forewarning to others who may attempt what he’s attempted.”

Pickard says the claim also asks that Robertson’s legal fees be covered and that the case be tried by jury.

Thibeault has 20 days to respond, although Pickard says it could still be a year or so before the case goes to trial.
