A rapid shift in conditions was the major reason school buses weren’t cancelled Wednesday.
Kent Orr is the GM of CLASS, the organization that manages school bus planning and schedules. He says the decision as to whether the buses will or won’t run is made by 6am.
“Based on the conditions on the ground at the time, we made the call that it was going to be slow going, which it was,” Orr explains. “It’s tough to look back now and say at 6 o’clock did we make the right call or the wrong call, now that the dust has settled we know that about a third of our buses in all of Chatham-Kent ran with delays of more than 10 minutes.”
Student transportation was the subject of a great deal of online scrutiny yesterday when over 100 buses were running behind.
Orr says they have people on the road watching conditions, they monitor the forecast through Environment Canada, and they communicate with municipalities before making a final decision.
