Chatham’s First Female Officer Retires

It’s the end of an era at the Chatham-Kent Police Service.

30 years after her first day on the job, Constable Amy Finn, the first female officer in Chatham, wrapped up her career this week.

Finn says there were some hard times, but they were outweighed by the good ones.

“I’m not going to lie, there were guys on the service that didn’t think I should be there,” Finn says. “There were people out in the public that wouldn’t talk to me, they would talk to a male officer.”

Finn says she was lucky to have some female colleagues to help her along the way

“We had Rose Kucharuk, who was already in Wallaceburg, so that was nice, and the OPP in Chatham had a couple of females,” she explains, “so if I ever had any questions in regards to policing, I could look somebody up.”

Finn has been honoured for the last two years by being nominated for a Police Association of Ontario “Hero of the Year” award.

This year’s winner will be announced on May 7th at the PAO’s annual general meeting in London.
