Port Lambton Students Walking for Water

A group of elementary students in Port Lambton are getting a lesson in water conservation today.

Students at Riverview Central School will be going for a one kilometre walk along the St Clair River this afternoon.

Grade 5-6 teacher Jennifer Pederson says it gives the kids a better understanding of issues surrounding clean water.

“We’ve spent about a week educating the students about the lack of access to clean water that many people around the world have. Today we’re going to be fundraising and take a 1 kilometre walk down along the river, collect some water in containers, and walk that water back, just to simulate the experience many women and children have to go through every day just to get water for their family,” Pederson says.

She says all of the funds they collected are going to the We Walk for Water campaign.

“The We Charity has provided a lot of learning resources so there have been lesson plans in the classroom,” Pederson explains. “We’re hoping will all those facts and the different things they’re learning that they will carry this through and maybe something of them will be out there making a difference in 20 years, making sure that other people have their basic human rights being met.”

Online donations are being accepted to help increase access to clean water around the world. By the end of the day Monday, the school had raised over $520.
