A special campaign is encouraging kids to be more active.
Super Kids CK Coordinator Annie Lukacsovics says the YMCA is trying to get families to unplug.
“The focus of power off and play is ultimately to reduce recreational and sedentary screen times. so the amount of time we spend sitting or reclining where we are watching TV or playing games. Especially among children is quite high, so the goal is trying to replace that with playing, interacting face-to-face, as well as getting physically active and even eating without screens,” says Lukascovics.
Lukacsovics is encouraging parents and kids to visit the Super Kids Facebook page to share how they power off and play to win some prizes.
“On the Facebook page if they comment on how they power off and play with their family that’s one ballot for a prize, and then if they share it as well that’s 2 ballots for a prize. The prizes could be any of 1 of 6 prizes, it could be a slime kit, art jar kit, it could be rock painting or bubbles and chalk so it could be a lot of cool things,” adds Lucaskovics.
It’s the latest phase of the Healthy Kids Community Challenge to reduce the amount of time kids spend in front of a screen.
