Communities along the Thames River and Lake Erie are one step closer in reducing phosphorus in local waterways.
Last week, the federal Great Lakes Protection Initiative gave $600,000 to the Thames River Phosphorus Reduction Collaborative. The funds will be used to develop and test methods that will stop and remove phosphorus from agricultural runoff.
Mayor Randy Hope says that this initiative is a collaboration between government, organizations, and farmers.
With an algae bloom being forecast for Lake Erie in the next few weeks, a demonstration of one of these phosphorus reduction practices is happening outside Chatham this morning.
