Councillor Karen Kirkwood-Whyte is hoping to educate Chatham-Kent residents about N11 numbers.
Municipal administration will be looking into how many 911 calls over the last three years were for actual emergencies and how many could have been dealt with by another service.
Kirk wood-Whyte says if more people know about these hotline numbers, there won’t be as many non-emergency calls to 911.
“The 211 (social service hotline) has actually been here in Chatham-Kent for well over 20 years and I keep hearing people say ‘What’s that?” And if it’s been around for 20 years, we need to promote it and encourage people to use that simple three-digit number.”
Administration will also be looking into the feasibility of changing the municipality’s phone number to 311, which in some communities will connect callers to municipal services.
