The theft of a commemorative plaque in Cedar Springs is being called a disgusting act of vandalism. 
A sign, put up five years ago to honour victims of abuse at the former Southwest Regional Centre, has gone missing.
Municipal officials are expressing their sympathies to families affected.
“Theft and vandalism of any kind is a stain on our community but when that theft is in regard to a vulnerable segment of the population it is particularly disgusting,” says Mayor Darrin Canniff. “I urge anyone with information on the incident to contact the Chatham-Kent Police or Crime Stoppers.”
Councillor Anthony Ceccacci said he is disappointed. “To the residents and families of those involved, it has a great meaning. It represents so much more than just a plaque. We’re hoping that whoever took it realizes that fact. We’re hoping for a safe return.”
The Southwest Regional Centre was in operation from 1961 until 2008 for adults with developmental disabilities.
