Province Announces $28.5B in Transit Funding

$28.5 billion dollars is being invested in transit projects in the GTA.

Infrastructure Minister Monte McNaughton made the announcement alongside Premier Doug Ford, and Jeff Yurek, Minister of Transportation this morning.

Provincial officials say the new Ontario Line will cost about $11 billion dollars and will be completed by 2027. Extensions on existing lines make up the remainder of the funds, to be completed a few years after the Ontario Line.

Those extensions will be on the Yonge North, Scarborough, and Eglinton Crosstown West lines, “- a large portion of which will be built underground to keep people and goods moving on our roadways. This is our plan, our priority,” says Ford.

Yurek says the Toronto Transit Commission supports the people of Ontario, not just Torontonians.

McNaughton says that benefit will be in the form of jobs.

“Today we are embarking on the most ambitious provincial transit buildout Ontario has ever seen,” says McNaughton. “This is great for people and good for jobs.”
