Questions Raised Over Election Finances

A former mayoral candidate is once again taking shots at some of the candidates in last fall’s election.

Chatham-Kent’s compliance audit committee will be meeting at the Civic Centre later today to discuss complaints against eight councillors and mayoral hopeful Alysson Storey.

At the heart of the issue is a series of Facebook Live videos and debates hosted by Ben Labadie throughout the campaign. Powers claims the candidates accepted campaign contributions that weren’t included on their financial statements.

“This candidate appears to have accepted campaign contributions from Ben Labadie in excess of $100 and has not made any note of them on their campaign financial statement,” the application reads. “Furthermore, I believe the host, Ben Labadie, may have exceeded the $5000 contribution limit specified in Section 88.9(4) of the Municipal Elections Act.”

Powers also accuses a third party advertiser – Campaign Life Coalition – with operating a website and newsletter in support of certain candidates without filing any expenses.

It’s not the first issue Powers has had with the campaign. In November, he challenged the election results in Ward 1, however the case was dismissed in court.

The compliance audit committee will discuss the claims at the Civic Centre later this afternoon.
