Careless smoking is getting the blame for a house fire in Chatham.
Crews were called to the home on O’Neil Street just after 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon.
Authorities say a neighbour first noticed the flames and made sure the lone occupant got out safely.
The flames caused extensive damage, but fire fighters managed to prevent it from spreading to a neighbouring home.
Investigators say the blaze started on the exterior of the home. Damage is pegged at $200,000.
