It takes a community to reduce poverty.
About a dozen people took part in a public round table on Wednesday night to discuss poverty in the community.
The Chatham-Kent Prosperity Roundtable– a municipal initiative to raise the awareness of poverty locally as well as working towards reducing poverty– is hosting similar events across the municipality to gather feedback and ideas on how people and groups can do their part to help out people who are struggling economically.
Project Coordinator Phillip Mock says it’s not just the government’s job to reduce poverty. He says the plan is about building stronger communities and reducing poverty together.
Stats show there are 2,375 people in the community of Wallaceburg living below the poverty line, which is the highest ratio of any community in Chatham-Kent.
There are plans for the Prosperity Roundtable project to do more community engagement in the future, including talking with people about poverty while handing out hot chocolate at Wallaceburg’s Santa Claus parade in November.
